MARGJE

This painting of a red-pied cow has a unique and personal history. Originally painted in 2015, it adorned my own living room for years. At the time, I was still working with wooden stretchers—fine for smaller paintings, but for a large piece like this (140 x 100 cm), the frame warped over time. As a result, I decided to keep the painting myself, with the intention of restretching it one day.

That moment has finally arrived. With care, I have now placed the canvas on a sturdy aluminum stretcher—the standard I use for all my works today. But as I took another good look at the painting, something else struck me: the cow’s expression. Her gaze seemed too sorrowful. This piece was inspired by a Fleckvieh cow I often saw standing alone in a nearby meadow, and perhaps that loneliness had found its way into the painting.

I decided to give Margje a new look. With added depth and detail, her expression is no longer sad but warm and full of life. Her name was suggested by a dedicated collector of my work, inspired by the French film La Vache et le Prisonnier(1959), in which a cow is named Margueritte. I felt that ‘Margje’ suited her even better.

Framed in an elegant oak floater frame, Margje is now ready for a new home. This painting is more than just a work of art—it’s a true eye-catcher that brings tranquility, character, and warmth to any interior.
